Working with Me
What to Expect
I recruit 1-2 MA or PhD students each year. While I accept MA students directly from an undergraduate program, it is the rare undergraduate who goes directly into our PhD program. Students working with me will take coursework in Geography and other disciplines, such as Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Anthropology and Computer Science. I make every attempt to support students on research assistantships on my projects. Most of my students carve out a piece of my ongoing research projects for their own theses or dissertations, so please look carefully at my Research page and read the linked papers to see what type of work I do and expect my students to do.
The ideal candidate for graduate study will have some combination of the following skills: familiarity with GIS theory and software, statistical training (spatial or otherwise, using R or SAS), training in phylogenetic analysis, or a background in public health/epidemiology. Most important is a genuine interest in medical/health geography and spatial epidemiology, an ability to write clearly and a willingness to be self-directed in the acquisition of skills that are needed to complete your research.

Before You Apply
Please contact me via email ([email protected]) if you are interested in applying to work with me on a MA or PhD in health geography. Attach a resume/CV and indicate in the email what type of health geography/spatial epidemiology research is of particular interest to you, as well as what led you to your interest in geography of health and disease. In particular, if you have a strong desire to conduct research on a topic not listed on my Research page, discuss that topic and why it is of interest to you. We can then set up a phone or Skype call to chat in more detail.
